Looking at other reviews this seems to be one of those love it or hate it type books. I thought it was hilarious. I can't decide if I want to be Meryn or just have her as my BFF. There are a lot of movie quotes and some of the humor could be deemed as juvenile but it worked for me. Aiden is your fairly typical Alpha (bear) male but it doesn't take him long to accept Meryn in all her craziness. .There's a lot of love and friendships in this book and there are certain characters I'm already in love with and can't wait to pick up their books. My only real complaint is that it seems like these may have to be read in order because of the suspense part of the plot. I'd prefer to be able to pick which characters I'm in the mood to read instead of being semi-forced to read in order if I want to follow the larger arc of who is killing off shifters and why. I have yet to decide what I'll do.I would recommend that you try the sample before purchase if you're not sure the humor is going to work for you. It kicks in pretty quick so you should get a good idea if you think Meryn is funny or just an idiot.

This is my first time reading the work of Alanea Alder but it certainly won't be my last! I love unique paranormal romance, addicted to action, adventure & suspense, completely smitten with sexy, brave, alpha heroes, adore sassy, courageous heroines, and there's nothing I enjoy more than an infusion of laugh-out-loud humor, but when I can get it all in one well-crafted and beautifully written book, I'm in absolute heaven! And that's exactly what Alanea Alder delivered in My Commander, the first full-length standalone paranormal romance in her riveting and highly imaginative Bewitched & Bewildered Series. Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! Would I recommend it? You bet, and I am but only for adult readers since it does contain explicit language, graphic violence, and steamy, dreamy sex. Will I read this author again? Absolutely which is probably the best recommendation I can give! As a matter of fact, after completing this book, I raced back to and purchased the remaining nine books of the series, which speaks volumes as to how much I enjoyed this author's work! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! I was glued to my chair, white-knuckling my ereader, my heart fluttering wildly in my chest as the time flew as quickly as the pages! I fell in love with gruff, growly Aiden, who turned out to be nothing but a big teddy bear at heart, and Meryn truly captured my heart! I adored her quirkiness and free spirit! But just a little warning, folks, don't start this book unless you have plenty of time; you will not want to stop until you reach the last page. I should know; I stayed up all night because I couldn't stop reading! lol... Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read! Thanks for the recommendation Fran Zoch!
Where do I start? Just....no. Everything about this book was ill planned and ridiculous. The main characters were so back and forth with their personalities it almost gave me whiplash. It's like the author had certain scenes she wanted, so she would just have her characters act however she thought would be best in that scene. One moment the heroine is strong and kick ass, the next she's soooo childish and just plain stupid at times. She loves him one second with all her being, he says one wrong thing and she never wants to see him again.
It took me months to finish this book because of the ridiculousness of it. I would have to stop reading and just not look at it for weeks.
Fair warning, I was bewitched by all the positive reviews and bewildered at my own gullibility. Additional warning, I bought the book without reading a sample, so you know I’m doubly irked. I got though the first chapter? Meh, maybe not even that. Off the bat our h scales a ten foot fence and is surprised to find herself surrounded by big, strong, sexy men!! She is scared/not scared, quoting mainstream nerd shows. (so adorable!) H turns into a nonverbal Neanderthal and fireman-carries her off. Then she’s contrived scared, such that I was not even aware if she was legitimately afraid; totally accepting of shifters/fae/vampires/witches without question. Finally, she’s an entitled jerk. Being a jerk in the am and then accepting that some guys are going to buy you an expensive espresso machine when they don’t even know your name!? Yuck. I was out after that. Writing is bad. Not edited badly, written poorly. Characters are stereotypes. Not worth it, ladies.
