people coming to visit as someone approach death, and made it a point to remind the person of good
things they had done in their lives.
recently met someone who had been there and found the country people unchanged despite all
the political difficulties of this country. Touched me that was his impression.

This is a fascinating look at Burma through the eyes of an English colonist. This is a small piece of valuable history which encapsulates the colonialist mentality. The author made a valiant attempt to be non-judgmental but his prejudices and innate sense of superiority made regular appearances. A beautifully written documentation of the clash of cultures.
